Definition of DoS

An attempt by a malicious (or unwitting) user, process, or system to prevent legitimate users from accessing a resource (usually a network service) by exploiting a weakness or design limitation in an information system.

A generic term describing any operating system that is loaded from disk devices when the system is started or rebooted.

(Disk Operating System; pr. ‘doss’) Usually refers to MS-DOS, which was the standard operating system for PCs until- Windows 95- came out, now pretty much obsolete. Controlled by typing in text commands and has several serious limitations, but requires a much less powerful computer than Windows 95.
