Definition of Proxy

A computer (or the software that runs on it) that acts as a barrier between a network and the Internet by presenting only a single network address to external sites.

A service, process, or file that allows the computer to serve as an interface device between a remote system and the Internet. Common uses of a proxy are to send unsolicited (spam) email.

A software component that intermediates requests from client software components and responses from service or server software components that respond to those requests.

A Proxy Server sits in between a- Client- and the ‘real’- Server- that a Client is trying to use. Client’s are sometimes configured to use a Proxy Server, usually an- HTTP- server.
