Roots modified in some plants to perform functions other than absorption and conduction of water and minerals. Figure A shows tap roots of turnip, carrot and adventitious roots of sweet potato and figure B shows pneumatophores in Rhizophora. Tap roots system is the characteristics of dicot plants. Tap roots (develop from radicle) and adventitious root (develop from any part of the plant other than the radicle) get swollen and store foods. Pneumatophore is a specialized structure developed from the root in certain plants growing in swamps and marshes. These types of roots come out of the ground and grow vertically upwards. Pneumatophore helps to get oxygen for respiration.
